The GMP paper published in 2026 in Scientific Reports, reporting and analyzing geophagy in the Gibraltar macaques, and suggesting that this behaviour is a socially transmitted adaptive strategy to buffer the negative effects of ultra-processed food obtained from tourists and visitors, received a lot of media attention, mostly due to its pertinence regarding the effect of over-tourism, and the adaptability of the macaques to human disturbances.
